WATCH!: Second Trailer For ‘Mission: Impossible—Fallout’ Released
This sequel also sees the first time a villain has returned, as Sean Harris reprises his role as Solomon Lane, leader of a major crime organization called The Syndicate
Tom Cruise is back as Impossible Mission Force super spy Ethan Hunt. This time, he and his IMF team set out to stop their deadliest foe after a mission goes wrong.
Cruise introduced the character with “Mission: Impossible” in 1996. That film was an adaptation of the classic TV series from the 1960s and 70s. He followed that up with the much less widely praised “Mission: Impossible II” in 2000. Many thought the franchise was dead until JJ Abrams revived it with “Mission: Impossible III” in 2006.
“Philip Seymour Hoffman starred as the villain of that film, and it became an instant hit. Five years later, “Ghost Protocol” came along and has been considered by many to be the best in the franchise. That film set up events that carried through to “Rogue Nation” in 2015. “Fallout” is being touted as a direct sequel to “Rogue Nation,” which is a first for the franchise.
“Fallout” is the first film to bring back a director from a previous “M: I” film. Christopher McQuarrie returns as both writer and director after having scored raves for “Rogue Nation.”
This sequel also sees the first time a villain has returned, as Sean Harris reprises his role as Solomon Lane, leader of a major crime organization called The Syndicate. That organization was a major part of the television series.
Other returning cast members include Rebecca Ferguson, who impressed in “Rogue Nation” as Ilsa Faust, for her ability to go toe to toe with Ethan Hunt. Ving Rhames returns as computer genius Luther Stickell. Besides Cruise, Rhames is the only star to appear in all six films. Simon Pegg is back as Benji, and Michelle Monaghan returns as Julia. Ethan’s wife has not been seen since a very quick glimpse in “Ghost Protocol.”
Henry Cavill and Angela Bassett join the franchise as CIA operatives, although their role in Hunt’s story is still widely unknown.
