Gabrielle Union looks great on the cover ofEssence magazine’s November 2016 issue.
The 43-year-old stunner, actress and activist is talking about Hollywood, marriage, motherhood, politics, sports and 90s R&B.
The shoot sees her wearing pieces from Lanvin, Diane von Furstenberg and Michael Kors Collection.
Here’s what the 42-year-old actress had to share with the magazine.
On Birth of a Nation and Nate Parker’s rape case: “…As a rape survivor and as an advocate, I cannot shy away from this responsibility because the conversation got difficult. I don’t want to put myself above anyone’s pain or triggers. Every victim or survivor, I believe you. I support you. I support you if you don’t want to see the film. I absolutely understand and respect that. I can’t sell the film. This movie has always been about more than one person, and for the outspoken feminist advocates and allies who risked a lot to be a part of this project—Aja Naomi King, Aunjanue Ellis, Penelope Ann Miller—we are okay if you have to sit this one out, and we’re okay if you don’t, and we understand…”
The star actress previously spoke out — amid controversy surrounding former assault accusations against the film’s director, Nate Parker — about being raped at gunpoint while working at a Payless shoe store 24 years ago.
Gabrielle Union says she feels a “responsibility” to tell her story of sexual assault so that other women feel comfortable and confident to stand up for themselves.
She says, “As a rape survivor and as an advocate, I cannot shy away from this responsibility because the conversation got difficult. I don’t want to put myself above anyone’s pain or triggers. Every victim or survivor, I believe you. I support you.”
