France forward Antoine Griezmann has admitted that this year’s Ballon d’Or race is already over after Cristiano Ronaldo won Euro 2016 with Portugal.
Griezmann, 25, was one of the standout players at the European championship and ended up as the tournament’s top scorer with six goals, in addition to his three assists.
Following his sensational form at the tournament, the Atletico Madrid attacker has been tipped as a strong candidate for this year’s Ballon d’Or trophy, however, the Frenchman believes the accolade will go to Ronaldo after following up his Champions League victory for Real Madrid with an unlikely success at the European championship.
“For the Ballon D’Or, it is all over,”Griezmann told Goal.
“Ronaldo won the two big competitions this season.”
Meanwhile, new Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has led the celebrations following his country’s incredible achievement on Sunday.
As Portuguese fans celebrated long into the night, Mourinho took to Instagram to savour the moment.
The former Chelsea boss uploaded a picture of himself holding a Portugal scarf aloft with the caption: “If you want to visit the country of the European champions visit PORTUGAL!!!!“
