Idris Elba has dismissed speculation that he will play James Bond – but not because of his race.
Elba was actually on “GMA” to promote Star Trek Beyond, and opened up about playing the film’s villain. “When I was a kid, I was watching Star Trek at 11 years old, before I was an actor or wanted to act,” he told Michael Strahan. “So to be asked to be in a Star Trek film and be a villain, that was like a honor. And I wanted to do the prosthetic thing.”
The actor is completely unrecognizable in the movie thanks to his alien head, a process that took four hours of makeup each day. “You’re moving your face, but your face, the exterior, isn’t moving as you think it is,” Elbis shared. “It takes a little while to get used to it.”
Strahan changed topics by asking if there’s any update to the speculation Elba could be the next Bond, which the British star then shot down. He replied, “No, man. It’s the wildest rumor in the world. I keep saying if it was to happen, it would be the will of a nation, because there’s not been no talks with me and the studios about any of that that. But everywhere I go, people want that to happen.”
Elba then joked, “But if I’m really honest, man, I think I’m too old for that. I can’t be running around in cars, [with] ladies and martinis. Who wants to do that? It sounds terrible.” That prompted Strahan to quip, “If you don’t want it, I’ll take it!”
The laughs continued as some of the morning show’s crew received wardrobe makeovers thanks to Elba’s clothing line, giving them “swagger.” Check out the full video below!
